Prof Fazal Rizvi
Fazal Rizvi is Professor of Global Studies in Education at the University of Melbourne Australia, as well as an Emeritus Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the United States. My talk will be based on research I have conducted over the past few years in elite schools in a number of countries. Some of this research is reported in a book, Class Choreographies: Elite Schools and Globalisation (Palgrave 2017). Each of these schools is aware of the privileges its students enjoy and is committed therefore to such programs as CAS, service learning, community action and so on, along with the notion of international communication and understanding. In this talk, I will discuss how students participation in these activities could be utlized to develop a greater sense of ethical responsibilities towards those who are less privileged. This I will argue demands teaching the virtues of relationality and critical self-reflection.
